5 Easy Ways to Jeopardize Your Charity
This document is a compendium of the items that represented the most 'a-ha!' moments for the 1,100 non-profit and charity representatives who participated in one of the 29 workshops that we convened across Western Canada over the past year, though a project supported by CRA.
These are the 5 'easiest' ways to jeopardize your charity:
- give grants to non-profits
- drift from your charitable purposes
- don't file your annual information return T3010B
- issue donation receipts in exchange for services
- operate an unelated business

Related to this topic, we are also delighted to announce a new service called Charity Check-Ups. For a modest fee (based on the size and complexity of the charity), we undertake a thorough review of charity compliance, and recommend next steps if required.
This process can take place in-person, or remotely. Areas covered include analyses of:
- charitable objects language vs. actual activities
- flow of grants to qualified donees
- proper receipting
- GST / HST
- employment of staff versus contracting / 'casual labour'
- adherence to the disbursement quota
- T3010B accuracy
- social enterprise compliance
For new charities, we also offer accounting ledger set-up, using Simply Accounting software.
For non-profits considering charitable status, we can assist with the decision-making, ensuring that the organization makes the most appropriate choice for its unique circumstances.
We can also assist with completing charitable applications to CRA. We perform this work with the oversight of a knowledgeable charity lawyer.
