ASPECT BC has partnered with internationally renowned educator and Career Development scholar, Dr. Roberta Borgen (Neault) of Life Strategies, to create our online Values-Based Leadership series for a present-day world with work.

These courses are designed for the busy leader or emerging leader.  Take one or two courses or take the entire series to earn a certificate in Values Based Leadership.

The Values Based Leadership Certificate includes:

  •  3 electives
  • Pecha Kucha Presentation & Capstone Project

Series Description

Values Based Leadership is a holistic approach addressing three dimensions: the characteristics of the individual leader, the interpersonal relationships and group dynamics of those working with the leader, and the specific organizational context in which they exist. With the context of community-based organizations, this series supports leaders as agents of change, visionaries, and motivators. Topics such as leadership and change, self-awareness, trust, motivation, communication, teamwork and more will be explored in relation to the values, vision, and mission of individuals and organizations. Students will explore how to “be” rather than what to “do” – utilizing values to steer actions, articulate a vision, and secure commitment from others through shared beliefs.

    In partnership with Life Strategies, the updated Values-Based Leadership Series curriculum, originally developed by ASPECT, meets the needs of busy executives and emerging leaders.  Students who complete all required series components (6 core courses, 3 electives, and the capstone project), will receive a Values Based Leadership certificate. Alternatively, students can select one or more individual courses (core or elective) for immediate application to their work environment. The series is designed to accommodate a busy work life, to fill in gaps in understanding or as a full first step into leadership.

    Series Format (30 Hours)

    This series requires students complete all 6 core courses (12 hours; 6 @ 2 hours each), 3 elective courses (6 hours; 3 @ 2 hours each), and the capstone project (12 hours). The online course will be conducted using Life Strategies’ e-learning system and the capstone project will be submitted through the online course site. Any in-person component will be held virtually under further notice. All course qualify for CPU credits.

    Learning Activities

    Students will be required to complete the following learning activities:

    1. Prepare (Monday to Wednesday): Topical resources (e.g., readings, videos) and notes will introduce relevant foundational concepts and helpful tips/strategies for your work. 
    2. Join (Wednesday, 12:00 – 12:30pm): Live 30-minute webinars will provide the opportunity for students to hear directly from the instructor further exploring the topic. Students should watch for the access information to be distributed via the news forum (or email directly from your instructor). If any student is unable to attend live, a webinar recording will be made available for later review. This means you can take two electives during the same time-frame. 
    3. Discuss (Thursday to Saturday): Active engagement in the topical discussion is the students’ opportunity to apply their learning, ask for clarification from their instructors, and connect with peers. 
    4. Reflect (Due Sunday): Throughout each course, students refine their personal view of leadership. In a private blog on the course site, students will share a brief reflection of how their views have been shaped in the course and strategies for implementing learning at work currently or in the future. These reflections are required for successful series completion and will be particularly helpful in composing the capstone project. 


    This series is ideal for current leaders who have limited leadership training and/or have identified gaps that they would like to fill in their leadership competencies. The series would also be relevant to aspiring leaders who expect to transition into a leadership role within the next year or so.
