Last Monday, I had the honour of presenting to the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services as part of the Budget 2026 consultations. Getting there was a thrill—going through security, walking the historic halls, and entering the grand committee room filled me with pride and purpose.
The day was filled with five-minute presentations and Q&A sessions. It was inspiring to see the dedication of the MLAs—representing all parties—who listened carefully, asked thoughtful questions, and engaged meaningfully. I also enjoyed listening to other organizations' presentations. This is government at its finest.
I proudly represented ASPECT’s nearly 100 community-based employment service providers across BC. I spoke about how our members help people find meaningful work, support employers, and reduce strain on crisis systems like housing, healthcare, and income assistance. I also raised concerns about the $77 million in federal cuts to BC’s employment services, which are forcing program closures, rural office shutdowns, and skilled staff layoffs—hitting those furthest from the labour market the hardest. ASPECT put forward three key recommendations:
-
Offset the federal funding shortfall with a $50 million provincial investment over two years.
-
Recognize employment services as critical infrastructure and embed providers in workforce planning.
-
Improve funding predictability, particularly for rural areas, and support innovation with flexible funding.
Speaking on behalf of our members and the broader sector was a privilege. However, without urgent investment, the recent cuts risk dismantling a vital support system for BC’s workers and employers.
There is still time to send your written submissions to the Committee through the LABC Consultation Portal until June 20 at 2:00 p.m. (Pacific). Be sure to read the pre-budget consultation document to align your recommendations with government priorities.
