Savour the Last Time Change

March 05, 2026 9:22 PM | Anonymous member (Administrator)

Like many of you, I have been following the news about the BC government's decision to move to permanent daylight saving time. While the practical impact on most of us will likely be small, it is another reminder of how public policy decisions quietly shape the rhythm of our daily work.

For those of us working in pan-Canadian networks, time zones are already part of our regular calculations. Calls with colleagues in Ontario and Atlantic Canada often mean early mornings here in BC, while our western perspective sometimes allows us to connect with partners later in their day. The shift to permanent daylight savings time will not change that reality dramatically, but it may make winter coordination with our eastern colleagues a little easier.

What struck me more than the time change itself was the conversation it sparked about alignment. For years, discussions have centred on whether BC should move in step with neighbouring jurisdictions or chart its own course. I am proud to see BC show leadership after years of discussion and debate.

This alignment question feels familiar to those of us in the employment and career development sector. Our work often sits between local realities and broader systems as we respond to the needs of our communities while navigating provincial policies, national initiatives, and global labour market trends.

Thankfully, ASPECT members work across systems every day. Whether it is coordinating with partners, adapting programs, or responding to changing labour markets, the sector has always been good at making things work. A time change will not alter that rhythm much, but it does remind me how adaptable our community really is.

For most of our BC readers, please take a moment to savour the last moment you will need to "spring forward" an hour this Sunday morning.
